ADHD and Organophosphates

Posted on January 12th, 2012

For many years our clinic has worked with children and their parents that have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) as well as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).  Medical treatment for these conditions involves medications which can have side effects that can range from bothersome to quite serious.

Many researchers are trying to find the one thing which causes ADHD.  Our experience is that this condition, like many health conditions, is due to a combination of several factors.  Each individual has their own unique manifestation of these factors.  It appears to us this is a condition which involves a person with a genetic inability to properly detoxify the chemistry to which we are all exposed.  On top of that we add extra chemistry from vaccinations, yeasts, viruses and other chemicals.

I found an interesting article from Environment Health Perspectives which links organophosphate and ADHD.  Organophosphates are chemicals used for, among other things, insecticides and herbicides.   Most commercially grown fruit and vegetables has had exposure to these chemicals.  What I find most interesting with this article is that they linked ADHD to organophosphate exposure in utero as well as after birth.  In other words mom’s exposure to this chemistry had an effect on the baby even before it was born.

This does not mean there is nothing that can be done to help the child.  In fact there is a lot that can be done.  We can use nutritional supplements to assist the liver in it’s ability to detoxify these chemicals.  Also via the use of Brain Based Therapy, like the Interactive Metronome and chiropractic adjustments, we can work to improve the balance of brain activity.  This care along with dietary changes like avoiding sugars and food allergies can go along way to allowing these kids to get off their medications.
